GPS Navigation

INTRODUCTION to GPS

Do you have a Garmin, Magellan or Tom-Tom Navigational aid?  Download a Point-of-Interest file to help find some of the local Dancing halls.  Better yet, download our TourGuide file to get some pictures and music to enjoy while you are on your way.   (See instructions below)

Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) have brought a completely new array of changes to the way we travel.  Devices such as the Tom-Tom Magellan, and Garmin line of products are relatively inexpensive, always up to day, and most people find easier to use than a map.

One of the key features that these devices contain is something called the Points-of-Interest.  This is a list of possible destinations to which a user might want to use as a destination.  Many modern devices can add to this list from any number of sources from their computer.  A file is downloaded from the source to the computer and the computer then downloads the file to the GPS device.  On type of such a file uses the suffix, .GPX

The content of this file can be expanded in more modern devices to include MP3 files for music and pictures in .JPG format.   One such example of this is the TourGuide file which simply combines a GPX file containing several destinations with references to related files containing pictures and music.

Let us say you want to take a tour in Washington DC.  A TourGuide could lead you to the White House, The Washington Monument and the Lincoln memorial with pictures, music and narrative descriptions played as you drive past certain points.  It can even remind you of speed limits and when you are about to pass an intersection with cameras that take pictures of license plates of those caught speeding through red lights.

We at the hayloft have no intentions of being that complex. At present, we have only the hayloft in our little tour however, we would like to experiment on a more modest scale if this works out by building a list of clubs we visit and adding them to our tour.
