September 1, 2009 - Formal attire is back

Now that September has rolled around again, we are back to our normal dress code.

We do not intend for this policy to discourage people from coming to our dances just because they do not have official square dance outfits. If you come dressed in clothes appropriate for a worker in an informal office, no fashion police will look askance.

We do address some of the common sense issues on our etiquette page.

Other than that, looking on our web site or any other web site, it is difficult to come up with a definition of what the dress code is.

Here is what I have been able to glean are some suggested minimum standards that people seem to agree is appropriate.

Soft soled shoes are recommended so that you will be able to glide across the dance floor without either sticking or slipping and at the same time not marring the dance floor.

Some Suggestions for Men

Long pants and long sleeved shirts are recommended.
The reason for the shirt statement seems to come from the idea of not presenting hairy, sweaty arms to the lady dancers.

Some Suggestions for Ladies

Ladies typically wear skirts and blouses.
Avoid wearing excessive jewelry.
When other dancers get entangled in your jewelry, it can hurt, them and you

In recent years the dress code has relaxed to include prairie or western-style skirts for the women (no petticoats or pettipants) and dress jeans for the men. Some clubs even allow dress jeans for both the men and the women.
